Though slightly biased at times (name a history book that isn't), "The Eagle and the Raven" sucked me in from the start, and didn't let go until the finish.
This is a well written account of two rivals, the American, Sam Houston, and the Mexican, Santa Anna. It describes their battles, their good decisions and bad.

What an amazing, amazing book. Pauline Gedge manages to recreate a pre-Roman England (Albion) that feels so alive and so real, which is a skill that few /5. The Eagle and the Raven was removed by the editor from Michener's book "Texas." Michener then had it published separately.
